Virginia's Women Health Clinics

Protect Access to Women's Health Care Women require access to safe, legal abortion care, but women's health care providers in Virginia are under attack. Anti-choice lawmakers have passed a law that subjects only women's health care centers to new regulations that have nothing to do with the safe delivery of reproductive health care services for women. These new regulations could restrict access to reproductive health services. Some health centers could close, while costs at remaining centers could skyrocket. Without providers or affordable options, access to safe, legal abortion care in Virginia could be dangerously undermined. The effect of the law will depend on the regulations produced by the Board of Health, but women's health centers in the state that currently provide safe and legal first-trimester abortions may have to meet unwarranted and burdensome regulations unrelated to the safe delivery of services for women.

TAKE ACTION: Send a message to the Health Commissioner that these regulations must be based upon evidence-based medical practices that advance the public health. The League of Women Voters is asking you to send letters to the State Health Commissioner -- Dr. Karen Remley. The Virginia Department of Health personnel are formulating the regulation proposal that the Board of Health will vote on September 15th, but letters need to get to Dr. Remley no later than the August 19th so that she will have them during the draft process. The request to Dr. Remley is to draft the least burdensome regulations possible. A sample draft letter you can send the letter to joe.hilbert@vdh.virginia.gov for delivery to Dr. Remley

Current League Action and Advocacy

League Supports the Disclose Act:

The League calls on Congress to pass the Disclose Act, or the Democracy is Strengthened by Casting Light on Spending in Elections Act, which would restore transparency to U.S. elections by requiring disclosure of corporate and union spending in candidate elections. We also call on Congress to preserve and extend ethics enforcement. With the election awash in special interest money, it is no time to cut back on the enforcement of ethics standards in Washington. Read the Full Press Release and join us in urging Congress to pass this act.
